SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA
Sub-Saharan Africa, our target area, lies south of the Sahara desert. The United Nations Development Program lists 48 of Africa’s 54 countries as “sub-Saharan.” According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), about 600 million people in this region live without electricity, and rely on dangerous, inefficient and environmentally destructive forms of cooking fuels. The need here is severe – two thirds of the non-electrified global population live in Sub-Saharan Africa. In addition, electrification rates remained at 45% in 2018, and it has remained relatively low compared to other parts of the world.
